The Flyers swapped minor leaguers with a division rival Monday, sending Adirondack Phantoms defenseman and alternate captain Danny Syvret to the New York Rangers in exchange for enforcer Kris Newbury.

Newbury, 31, has spent much of his career in the AHL, having played just 72 games in the NHL in parts of seven seasons. He has four goals and five assists for nine points and 132 penalty minutes in that time.

However, Newbury has been a solid AHL player since being drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the fourth round (No. 139 overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

In 599 career games in the AHL, Newbury has 142 goals and 297 assists for 439 points as well as 1,332 penalty minutes.

His past three seasons have been his most productive with the Connecticut Whale, posting 61, 64 and 62 points respectively.

Newbury, who has played in the NHL for Toronto, Detroit and the New York Rangers, has one year remaining on his contract and would bring a cap hit of $600,000 if he made the NHL roster.

Syvret, 28, who has been part of the Flyers organization on three different occasions, also had one year remaining on his contract.

He had six goals and 34 assists for 40 points as the Phantoms alternate captain last season.
