FEELING GIROUXVY

Giroux wants to be back to 100 percent from his finger injury yesterday, which is why he is pushing himself today

FEELING GIROUXVY

PHILADELPHIA – Claude Giroux wasn’t going to shoot pucks. Really, he wasn’t. He was going to wait, as was suggested by the training staff and the doctors until sometime next week.

But this is Giroux after all, and his noted competitive drive may have taken over for just a tad.

So there he was, with the early morning group on the second day of training camp firing pucks at the net, definitely ahead of schedule.

So, how did it feel?

“I probably should have waited until next week,” Giroux quipped. “It felt pretty good, but I’ll probably stay away from shooting for a little bit to make it come back quicker.”

But, that’s Giroux. That’s the captain’s mentality. Get back to normal post haste.

“Every day it’s feeling better and I’m doing a lot of treatment myself at night too,” he said of his surgically repaired finger, which was due to a golfing accident that severed tendons. “I’m trying to get to 100 percent as soon as possible.”

And he admits that he’s antsy.

“When I got on the ice, I started to stickhandle and it was feeling really good,” Giroux said. “I know I can’t be rushing it, [but] I really wasn’t shooting hard. I was just trying to see what I can do.”

When healthy, everyone knows what Giroux can do, which is why it’s so important to have him ready to go for the season opener, which is less than three weeks away.

“I’m glad he’s coming along,” said Braydon Coburn. “We want to see him come back as soon as he can.”

It was a simple statement, but a mutual feeling felt by everyone in the Flyers locker room.

And Giroux knows it too, it’s just that he now has to take the advice of the trainers and keep it slow to allow the injury to heal properly so he can be that great leader and player.

“[The trainers are telling me] not to rush it,” Giroux said. “They say, ‘Take your time.’ We’re going to start testing it more next week when we know there’s no danger. I’m going to go back on the ice one more time but I’m not going to shoot. I’m just going to try to get my legs going.

Classic Giroux. While most players would relish an afternoon off during training camp, Giroux instead decided to skate a second time Friday. So, he took the ice with the third group of the day, just to make sure he stayed on track to be in game shape in time for Toronto on Oct. 2.

But, as for when he might get some game action in during the preseason? Well, Giroux doesn’t want to go down that path just yet.

“I want to go day-by-day,” he said. “That’s what I told myself that’s what I’m going to do. I don’t want to start looking at next week because if I told you last week what I was going to do this week I probably would have changed it.”

It seems as if the restraint is the hardest part for Giroux. Which, for the Flyers, is a good thing – as he wants to be on the ice more than maybe any player in the locker room.
