Flyers Inside Out

VOORHEES, N.J. – The other day Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said – in so many words – you can never have enough defensemen.

He wasn’t kidding.

Already with nine defensemen in training camp on one-way contracts, the Flyers decided to make the competition on the blue line a bit more spirited.

The Flyers signed veteran defenseman Hal Gill to a Professional Try-Out contract and he will attend camp with the team.

If the Flyers eventually wanted to sign Gill to an official contract, they would first have to clear some cap space as they are currently a little more than $1 million over the salary cap.

Gill, 38, has played parts of 16 seasons in the NHL for five teams and has been as consistently healthy.

In his lengthy career he has averaged playing in 73.5 games per season, or 92 percent of all the games he could have possibly played in his career.

Drafted by the Boston Bruins in the eighth round (No. 207 overall) in the 1993 NHL Entry draft, the Concord, Mass. Native spent nine seasons with the Bruins, parts of two with Toronto, parts of two with Pittsburgh (where he won the Stanley Cup), parts of three with Montreal and parts of the last two seasons with the Nashville Predators.

Known more for his defensive game, the 6-7, 244 rearguard didn’t register a point in 32 games with the Predators last season.

In 16 seasons, Gill has played in 1102 games scoring 36 goals and 148 assists for 184 points and 960 penalty minutes.

He has also played in 110 career playoff games.
