Briere concussed, McGinn recalled; Flanagan a Hobey Baker finalist

VOORHEES, N.J. – The Flyers got a bit of bad news Monday when forward Danny Briere was diagnosed with a concussion.

Briere apparently suffered the concussion during a hard practice Saturday. Some reports have suggested it occurred when he fell awkwardly into the boards.

Briere told me via text message today that he “doesn’t feel too good today” and needs a few days before he’s ready to talk further about his condition or how he suffered the concussion.

The Flyers placed Briere on injured reserve and recalled forward Tye McGinn from the Adirondack Phantoms to take Briere’s roster spot.

In 26 games this season, Briere has five goals and eight assists for 13 points.

Briere missed the first four games of the season with a fractured wrist suffered during the lockout when he was playing in Germany.

This is his second concussion in as many seasons, as he missed six games in 2012 after being hit by New Jersey defenseman Anton Volchenkov.

As for the other injured Flyer, Nick Grossmann is day-to-day with an upper body injury. He, however, remains on the 23-man roster, which means there’s a legitimate possibility that he plays tomorrow against the New York Rangers.

Like Briere, Grossmann was also injured in practice, although his injury occurred Friday. He tried skating Sunday morning, but apparently wasn’t healthy enough to play against the Penguins.

“That’s part of hockey, that happens,” Kimmo Timonen said. “That tells you how hard we practiced. Sometimes you need to practice hard and get some practice time. You never want to lose two players because of practice, but it’s part of the game and I’ve seen that happen. It tells you how hard we practiced that week.”

Kyle Flanagan, a recent Flyers signee out of St. Lawrence College, is a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award given to the top hockey player in the NCAA.

Flanagan currently ranks fifth in the fan voting portion of the award, which will ultimately be selected by a panel of selected members from the print media, electronic media, NHL scouts, college hockey coaches and officials.

Flyers fans can cast their vote for Flanagan here.
