Getting the Band Back Together

Brian Boucher is back for a fourth stint with the Flyers.

The Flyers completed a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes to reacquire Boucher, along with defensive prospect Mark Alt in exchange for forward Luke Pither, who was playing for Trenton in the ECHL.

Boucher, 36, played 10 games with Carolina last season and had a 3.41 goals against average and an .881 save percentage.

He hurt his shoulder swimming in the summer and needed surgery to repair it. He spent much of the lockout working out and rehabbing at the Flyers Skate Zone.

He was cleared by doctors to resume hockey activities at the end of December.

The Flyers are adding Boucher as a bit of goaltending insurance in case of an injury to either starter Ilya Bryzgalov or backup Michael Leighton.

Boucher and Leighton were the tandem who carried the Flyers to the 2010 Stanley Cup Finals.

Boucher will likely be sent to the Adirondack Phantoms to start the season.

Alt, 21, was a second round pick (No. 53 overall) of the Hurricanes in 2010. He currently plays for the University of Minnesota.

Alt has size (6-3, 205) and strength and although he’s reportedly been up and down as far as his game at Minnesota, recent reports are that he has played much better and is more consistent, showing the promise that had him drafted so high by the Hurricanes.

Pither, 23, spent two seasons with the Phantoms before being sent to the ECHL out of camp this season, a victim of the numbers game with the lockout and NHL players playing down in the AHL.

In 35 games combined with both the Trenton Titans and Wheeling Nailers, Pither had 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points.

More on this as the opening day of camp develops.
